As the sound of 1970`s music changed and evolved, Gibson changed with it. Gibson experimented with guitar designs, materials and components that were dramatically different from older mahogany solid body guitars. These extra long scale instruments were made from maple instead of heavy mahogany for increased playing comfort. Gibson showed their commitment to innovation when they unveiled the RD line of guitars in 1977. The RD stands for the research and development that went into these technically advanced guitars. The RD Artist guitar and bass for example, was equipped with Moog, expansion/compression circuitry. According to Gibson the RD series was designed "with size, shape, and density of materials, chosen for their brightness, brilliance, sustain and comfort".
