Vintage 1961 Gibson Electric Guitars
In 1961, the body design of the Les Paul was changed, due to the demand for a double-cutaway body design, to compete with Fender`s highly successful and popular stratocaster. Les Paul did not like the new body style and let his endorsement lapse; the new body design then became known as the Gibson SG, meaning solid body. Also, this was the last year for the thin line hollow body EMS 1235 double mandolins.
Search for the 1961 Gibson Les Paul, SG or other 1961 Gibson guitar on EBay and find the tone, crunch, and sustain that a vintage gibson can deliver.
The 1961 collaboration between revered guitarist Johnny Smith and the Gibson guitar company produced the most expensive guitar ($795.00) Gibson had made up to that point. The guitars were built to Johnny Smith`s precise specifications for superior sound quality and playability. Today with collectors paying thousands of dollars for a Johnny Smith Gibson guitar would be delighted to get their hands on one for less than a grand.
Another notable Gibson guitar to be introduced by Gibson in 1961 is the Barney Kessel guitar. For collectors who don't want to spend more on a vintage 1961 Gibson guitar than they do on their house payments, there are plenty of vintage Gibson models available at lower price points. Given the legendary Gibson name, holding a 1961 Gibson guitar really is like holding a piece of music history in your hands no matter what model you buy.
